Position Description
The employee in this position performs a variety of tasks related to the development, implementation, maintenance, evaluation and user support of the technology resources of the Iosco-Arenac District Library.
Technology refers to computer automation of library activities including but not limited to bookkeeping, circulation, cataloguing, patron records, patron access workstations, on-line catalogues, interlibrary loan, Internet, networks, and statistical reporting. Technology also includes the management of the Iosco-Arenac District Library telephone system.
User support includes training of all support staff employed by the District, all Branch Library staff, volunteers and the public. User support also includes assisting in the development of written policy and procedure.
The Technology Coordinator is considered a full-time hourly employee working 40 hours per week.
The Technology Coordinator’s schedule varies, sometimes requiring weekend or early evening work. The Technology Coordinator may be asked to be on-call for short periods of time as the need arises.
The Technology Coordinator frequently travels, by personal vehicle, to and from Branch Libraries in two Counties, and to and from meetings and classes both inside and outside of the District service area. Mileage is paid either from home or from HQ (whichever distance is shorter) at the rate determined by the Board (as of January 1, 2006 set at $.32 per mile).
The Technology Coordinator works with computer hardware, software, network/telecommunications cabling and various tools, requiring fine motor skills, the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, the ability to climb ladders, the ability to see fine detail, and the ability to tolerate the standing, walking, sitting and bending required by the job.
The District Library Director supervises the Technology Coordinator.
The Technology Coordinator’s job location varies. The District is comprised of eight Library Branches (Administrative Headquarters is located at one of the eight sites). A desk and space at the Iosco-Arenac District Headquarters office will be provided until an alternative space is secured. U M S E O Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be able to clearly explain computer problems and solutions to persons with limited background and training (as well as those who are knowledgeable in the field), and serve as liaison between District administration, White Pine Library Cooperative technical staff, Valley Library Consortium technical staff, Branch Library staff, and hardware/software/automation vendors.
U M S E O Must be willing to actively participate in committee work, assist with grant writing, and assist the Office Assistant/Bookkeeper with the maintenance of the District Website.
U M S E O Must exhibit a working knowledge and ability to use PC hardware, application software, servers, networks, video and sound cards, printers, input devices, scanners, routers, switches and other hardware and software. Must be knowledgeable of the most current relevant operating systems and their immediate predecessors.
U M S E O Must be able to recommend for order, develop specifications for, properly transport, set up, diagnose problems, evaluate, service, dismantle, and upgrade computer equipment.
U M S E O Must be willing to work closely with the District Director on the development and administration of the technology budget, the Technology Plan, and the Universal Service Fund.
U M S E O Must demonstrate the ability to plan and conduct both one-to-one and group training sessions for staff and the public on application software and the basic use of the Internet.
U M S E O Must assist in the maintenance of accurate inventory records for all system hardware and software. Must make regular back-ups of computers in all District locations. Must establish and keep logs of system activities.
U M S E O Must coordinate and oversee building data wiring and related equipment installation, including any future fiber and/or cable connections.
U M S E O Must be willing to attend and actively participate in continuing education opportunities to assure growth in knowledge of information-related and emerging technologies.
U M S E O Must be willing to travel using personal vehicle to and from Library Branches, Valley Library Consortium/White Pine Library Cooperative (located in same building), and other locations for meetings, committee work and continuing education.
Required-A Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, or three years of recent (within the last five years) field experience in computer technology with certificates of completion of coursework in computers, or a comparable combination of appropriate training and experience.
Experience required in the following areas: TCP-IP, e-mail, Internet, Website development and maintenance, word processing, databases, spreadsheets, software installation, computer hardware components and system security.
The person in this position must be comfortable working with technical services personnel in person, over the telephone, and via e-mail.
Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills. Must enjoy working with people at all levels of computer skill, from novice to expert.
Self-motivated, energetic, patient and able to handle reasonable deadlines.
Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license, a clean driving record and a reliable vehicle.
Preferred-An ALA/MLS Degree. Experience writing grant applications.
